I’m doing a science Fair project in school. For the project, my partner and I will be swabbing bacteria, to see how well kitchen cleaners really do work. We’ll be spraying a surface with a number of different cleaners to see the effects. Afterwards we will be creating our own kitchen cleaner, that is non-toxic and environmental friendly. We already know how we are making this cleaner. We are in the process of writing a research paper and need some information on the bad in different kitchen cleaners and bacteria. So if you have anything that you think will help, please do tell us. Thanks!!!!!

We will be making the cleaner with vinegar, water, and lemon rinds or lemon oil. If you have any other ideas or suggestions feel free. Thanks. =]

All that you need for your environmentally friendly cleaner is vinegar. It works just as well as bleach on bacteria. You may find these links interesting.

Hi, I’m a microbiologist, just finishing up my Ph. D.
i would try growing the bacteria at a few different temperatures.
1) room temperature - if this stuff was left on the counter, how much would grow?
2) fridge - if food touched the counter and was put back into the fridge, would anything grow?
3) warm area (37C if possible; try putting on top of fridge where it is warm if you don’t have access to an incubator) - how many of these bacteria like to grow at body temperature?
as an additional experiment, you could just try touching your hand to one of the petri dishes. do the colonies of bacteria off the counter LOOK different than the ones that are normally on your skin (i.e., GOOD bacteria)? Do the bacteria growing before/after spraying the cleaner look different (i.e., did it kill all bacteria in equal amounts, or did it just kill certain types)?
Hope this helps!
have fun!
