My roommate used an aquarium for her pet hamster for a year. I was going to give the aquarium to goodwill but didn’t know if it was safe to put fish in it after it was used by a hamster. It’s a 10 gallon glass rectangular tank. I’ve cleaned it with just normal household cleaning products and then an organic glass cleaner.

If u used soap or sprays, no. It is very dangerous, no matter how well you rinsed it.
Yes, Let it sit in cleaning products over night or simply in hot water. It can be toxic for a fish to inhale cleaning chemicals and/or hamster bacteria or stool. Still unsure?, visit your local pet shop..the fish/aquatic animal section.
Thanks!

If you clean it out very well i don’t see the harm in letting fishy’s use it. it worked for me. lol =) good luck and thanks
You should not have cleaned the aquarium with cleaners…They are harmful to fish…You need to clean the tank with some salt water…and rinse, rinse, rinse with tons of fresh water…and then rinse it again…You can try some cheap fish like guppies and see if they survive before putting other fish in the tank…Don’t over stock the tank…A few small fish are all that a ten gallon tank can hold!!!
The only real danger is that tanks used for rodents tend to have had their silicon sealant scratched and chewed on by the rodent. It may need re-sealed if you see and damage to the silicon along the corners. (Basically, check to se if it holds water.)
The cleaners are not a big deal if you rinse the tank well.
