You can shampoo the carpets with a cornstarch & water mixture, or a vinegar and water mixture. “Cornstarch can be used to clean windows, polish furniture, shampoo carpets and rugs, and starch clothes.Vinegar is an ingredient in some natural carpet cleaning recipes.”

Why don’t you purchase yourself a very large cheap piece of carpet and place it where the children will be playing. This way you have virgin carpet under their little hands and feet.
Once you are back in your house you can always put this carpet piece in the basement or some small area where you want something soft to step on.
