Our local council have laid cheap (Chinese) granite paving stones and can’t get them clean. the stains include motor oil, chewing gum and market refuse like fruit. I am particularly interested in non-toxic, environmentally friendly solutions/ideas.

try some oxy clean. but walmart has some stuff for cleaning oil off of driveways i forgot what its called but it comes in an orange bad and i know it works great. i dont think it will hurt the environment unless you dont sweep it up and toss it in the trash.
Try Goof-Off and/or kitty litter
Try Vodka
Get yourself a motorized power washer with a “three ceramic head revolving nozzle”. You can add detergent as specified by the manufactorer of the machine and it should take off all that grease, and especially the food particles, those are the easy things… Chewing gum and all that will get blasted off.
I used the three ceramic head nozzles on concrete and it took off 26 years of discoloration and mold from the concrete walls, and made them look “pristine”, or like new!
But, remember this, I would put a filter on your lines, before you use the machine, because you “will” clog the ceramic nozzles up if you have lime suspension in your water supply (the best way to tell, is look at your faucets and see if there is any calcium or lime build up). Thats if you purchase the machine. If not, then dont worry about it, because whom ever you rent it from will have to replace the nozzles after so many hours of usage.
I wish you well..

sulfuric acid
easiest and less cost would be engine degreaser . it works great
From a restaurant supply store, purchase “quarry cleaner”. Mix the product according to directions, apply to area, LET FULLY DRY, then hose off.
Works great!
