My cat just got declawed and he has been back to the vet numerous times for it but they never do anything to clean them. he has hard blood clots in between his toes and it looks like he is in pain every time he walks or jumps onto the back of my love seat which is his favorite perch. does anyone have any safe non-toxic ideas as to how to clean them and make my little one happy and playful again?

Declawing is horrible and mean. Now that you’ve seen what you’ve done to your cat, hopefully you can persuade others not to do the same!

well try washing it off if you allready tried that then just go back to the vet and tell them what they did.

You don’t say how long it has been since the surgery. I wouldn’t do anything for about 10 days. The cat should take care if it himself, but, if he doesn’t be careful so that you dont reopen the wounds and cause more bleeding. Just make sure that he hasn’t re-injured the feet and wait until the wounds are healed well before trying to clean them.

I am so sorry that you and your baby are having so much trouble. I have had 3 cats declawed and have never had the kind of trouble you are having. Apparently the vet you used did not do it properly has I have never had any of my 3 to have have blood on them after. My vet uses a turniquet (spelled wrong I’m sure) to prevent bleeding and then he glues the holes shut.
However, you can use one of two things to clean your cat. First you can put peroxide on a paper towel or cotton ball and wipe his feet off. Second you can use saline solution (contact solution) to clean them. It breaks down the protein and helps to clean the blood off (had to use on a bird once).
Also be sure to use shredded newspaper in his litter box until they are healed so that he does not get any dirt or grit into his paws.
Furthermore, don’t let anyone tell you declawing is cruel, if down properly the cat does not show signs of discomfort. Unfortunately, the vet you used apparently did not know what he/she was doing.

Don’t use any alcohol or peroxide. Cats like to bath themselves you don’t want them licking that stuff.
If you must, just use a little warm water on a washcloth.
Don’t wipe just hold on foot for a few minutes and the blood will soften and dissolve
Really just letting the cat clean itself would be best.
It will take a few days to a week before the tenderness goes away.
Usually the feet are taped up snugly for the first few days to prevent blood all over the place and to help it heal over.
My cats usually pull and chew off the tape a few days after the surgery and then start licking and cleaning themselves.
ps: Luisa hasn’t a clue.

declawing a cat is one of the most painful and emotionally damaging thing a cat can go through. I know why people want to declaw their cat (to stop scratching on furniture), but a scratch post works great. Declawing a cat takes away their only defense. I have seen a cat fight off a German Shepherd before (yeah he got roughed up a bit, but the dog gave up too). The cat lays on its back and has 4 sets of “knives” and can fight very well.
I think declawing is pretty inhumane

Leave the poor thing alone and let it nurse itself. It will clean itself up when it feels it can and when it won’t hurt it so much. Just leave it in peace to recover. The dried blood isn’t hurting it and if it bothers you well too bad. Did you ever think maybe the vet didn’t clean it entirely because it was too painful? Are you for real??????
