How to clean metal? (without scratching it)?

Yup Yup asked:

I have a piece of metal that I was cleaning and I used one of those green scrubbers NOT a metal scrubber (Link - http://images.jmcatalog.com/prdimgs/kEycv4clEa/FRANK/FRANK3.JPG)
to clean it and now it’s dull. The metal I’m cleaning looks like stainless steel on one side but can bend easily so I’m guessing it’s aluminum. It also reflects images like a mirror but not as clear. Now it’s not very clear at all and like I said before, it’s very dull.

So in the future, how should I clean the metal so prevent the dullness from happening?

Also, the material I’m cleaning off is very sticky and hard to get rid of. It’s sort of like built up grime in an oven. Please don’t recommend any oven cleaners though. Only non-toxic cleaning supplies or organic supplies.
