I use a solution of vinegar and water to do pretty much all of my house cleaning. Am I doing okay?

Robin asked:
I am trying to get the majority of chemicals out of my house. My mom always told me to just put a little vinegar in water for a natural glass cleaner and disinfectant. Is she right, or am I doing my family a disservice my trying to go “green” this way. I use this to clean all the fixtures and floors in both kitchen and bathroom, as well as my hardwood floors. The house seems so clean to me. Opinions?

If you clean regularly, you are doiung fine with vinegar. If some things don’t look clean enough to you, you can use a little dish soap now and then. But if the house looks clean, it IS clean. Those strong chemicals aren’t needed unless a place has been neglected, or there are stubborn greas marks. Some people get really worried about killing germs, but antiseptic cleaners can do more harm than good.

That`s cool. I have a daughter that`s very “Green-House” conscience. Also try brewing 2 packs of tea diluting it with hot water then clean grease spills on the floor. I use this in lieu of hard grease cleaners in my kitchens.

Bravo! I use a solution of 1 cup vinegar, 2 cups hot water, a few drops of Ivory laundry soap, and a few drops of tea tree oil. I clean basically everything with this. This kills most, if not all, bacteria and molds. To scrub sinks and tubs clean and shiny, I mix baking soda with Ivory soap (or Dr. Brauners) and a little water. Mix into a paste, the consistency of Soft Scrub – and that’s exactly what you have. Leaves those sinks and tubs sparkling! Don’t use chlorine bleach – so bad for you and for the environment. Hydrogen peroxide will get out the stains that we’ve all been trained to use bleach on. Vinegar, Tea Tree oil, peppermint oil, and others are much more natural way to kill bacteria and molds.

Yes, vinegar is a good all-around cleaner. it is good also for killing mold.
Do NOT use vinegar on marble or natural stone because it is an acid and could etch or dissolve these materials.

Let’s see vinegar is a mild acid. It’s also a food source. Once the vinegar has evaporated bugs can be attracted. As a professional house cleaner I don’t recommend vinegar since acid is corrosive. If you use vinegar be sure to rinse well. Avoid mixing it with a base chemical. We all know how to make a volcano just mix vinegar and baking soda. Mix it with bleach and the same may happen.
I recommend a good wetting agent like Shaklee Basic H. A few drops in 16 ounces of water are good value. Buy a good vapor steam cleaner and there is no need for chemicals.
