Beagle Mom asked:
If anyone out there uses them could you please give me some brands that are good for laundry, everyday cleaners (countertops, sinks, toilets, tubs etc.) and bath and shower gels. I smelled some detergents today but can’t get past the herbal smell they all seem to have. Anyways any suggestions?

GSE (grapefruit seed extract) in water, citra-solv and some other citrus based (check the labels!) will disenfect better than clorox!
I keep birds and it’s totally safe!
You would be amazed at what you could clean with a solution of vinegar/water/baking soda. I have also used Method laundry detergent, grapefruit wipes, granite wipes, daily shower cleaner (smell is pretty potent on that though). Check this out:
baking soda and vinegar are great for just about everything. also lemon juice and olive oil are used to polish wood. if you search online you can find a few sites and the exact amounts to use . you can use baking soda/ vinegar to unclog a drain, as air freshener, to clean up greasy messes, take away rust, etc. not to mention, their cheap and can be used to whiten teeth, condition hair and vinegar cure athletes foot. if i find any sites i’ll let you know. i know there are a few books by vicki lansky (?) i think @ the library/ book store if you want. hope this helps. p.s. the chemical reaction makes it foam so be careful at first.
Ditto on the baking soda and vinegar. And you’ll find they cost less too, and don’t have that annoying perfumy smell many commercial products have.
You might also try looking at Simply Green products, which should be available in many stores.
Good luck!
I use very little cleansers of any kind in house cleaning. I need dish and laundry soap, but I seldom use cleansers of any kind in my bathroom, on the windows, or in the kitchen. I bought microfiber towels and you can clean glass with water with these towels.
For sinks, faucets, mirrors, bathtub, shower head, etc. I just dry them off every time I use them with the microfiber towels and they never get dirty. The towels just go in the laundry every week.
I really almost never use any cleaning products. The kitchen and bathroom floor needs some cleaner but a mild soap works. My tub has also been scratched with abrasive cleansers and scrubbing over the years (it is 80 years old). So I do have to scrub it down with some soap every week but everything else stays clean with just keeping it dry.
The toilet I keep clean by just brushing it every day. I use a toilet brush but no cleanser of any kind. I scrub off the ring around the water (it’s super easy and quick when you do it daily) and use the wet brush around the underside of the rim. I use a kleenex or a little toilet paper to wipe the handle and rim and other exterior surfaces. Sometimes I’ll use an alcohol wipe on the handle and seat but I don’t know how necessary it is, since it looks like it just came out of the showroom. It really does not get dirty if you do it daily.
This stuff all just takes a minute and you never have to clean or use cleaning products. Once you form the habit of drying everything down and scrubbing the bowl once a day, you will be amazed at how beautiful your bathroom and kitchen stay.
When I’m done with dishes (I do use soap there but I’m sure there are some mild organics that work very well), I take the wet towel and wipe down the outside of the fridge if it needs it. I wipe the front of the oven if it needs it and always wipe down the stove top. When I use the microwave it gets wiped out with plain water also. My microwave is about 15 years old and looks brand new. My faucets were installed 4 years ago and look like I just installed them today. And neither of them have ever been scrubbed or had cleansers used on them. Wiping stuff down right after you use it keeps you from having to scrub off stuff that has sat there an hour or a week. Stuff comes right up when it’s fresh. It’s waiting a week that makes the cleansers necessary. If I’ve cooked raw meat, I’ll wipe the counters with a soapy wash cloth and rinse it down, I also soap up the faucet handles while doing dishes, but then just dry it all off.
It really works, give it a try.
People think I’m a clean freak because my kitchen and bathroom are always shiny and spotless. They don’t realize they look that way because I **** cleaning and dry things instead.
