Kiachiquita asked:
I am curious if antimicrobials are safe for septic tanks? There is a company who sells natural home cleaning products made with tea tree oil which is an antimicrobrial, they claim you will never have to have your septic system pumped clean again if you use these products because the bacteria in the tank wont be killed and it can work effectively enough to do all the work and not have to pump.
What do you think?

I tend to say no. The microbes in the septic are what keep it going. Anything to mess up this mixture is iffy.

i have used a product called ridX. and was told to keep using it by the co that pumped it out the sludge was half of what he expected it to be after 7 years. most co recommend you pump out the system every 4/5 years.i,ll have mine done next year.it wont get rid of all the sludge but it will reduce it a lot.if they tell you you never have to pump it out get a warranty in writing and send me their name!

Proper care of the septic is the only way to keep from having problems. Don’t throw oils/grease down the drains, no personal hygiene products, and limit the amount of caustic cleaners such as bleach. I had my last tank for 11 years without adding anything to it and never had it pumped. If I needed a drain cleaning product, I used an enzyme drain cleaner such as Draincare by Zep. It contains the same good bacteria as the tank uses to eat solids.

anerobic baceria is what eats the crap that gets to the septic tank, that is what a lot of companies are selling you when they sell that kind of stuff, just a bunch of bacteria
