HI,
I am looking for natural ways to clean my house. I have heard of using baking soda for carpets but im not exactly sure what you are supposed to do with it. I think you sprinkle it on the carpet, and vacuum it up. But, does anyone have any suggestions for some natural cleaning ideas (I dont mean like natural cleaning products like that Seventh generation stuff) I mean, like natural products like vinegar and baking soda. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Vinegar works really well for alot of things. You can clean your shower with it or you can use lemons or lemon juice. You can clear out a drain like you would with liquid plummer…by using 1 cup salt, 1 cup borax and several cups hot vinegar. I use Borax alot. It works sooo very well. You can use it in the laundry or to clean with, like you would use comet or bar keepers friend.

I am encouraged that you feel the need to change the status quo. I offer no specific chemical or elemental advice, but ask you to find out EXACTLY what you are trying to “clean”. This will lead to some very different approaches to cleanliness as compared to the older ones where one product can do multiple jobs. My own pet peeve is the use of sodium hypochlorite, or “bleach” as useful for just about any cleaning job. In my view, this one chemical is responsible for the degradation of life itself, and is the ‘poster-boy’ for harsh chemicals.

Tea tree oil is an awesome cleaner and it kills all bacteria from the staph to HIV virus. It also will leave your house smelling great, unlike vinegar which smells like stinky socks. If your looking to get the smell out of your carpets you need to have them professionaly cleaned by an IICRC Certified company that uses “GREEN BALANCE” products. The products are non-toxic & bio-degradeble and are made from natural extracts. They also have a neutral ph so nothing harsh is in your home. Smells come from bacteria that is feeding off of some type of food ex.-dead skin cells (dust). You must kill the bacteria and remove their food source. This is accomplished with really hot water and a truck-mount cleaning machine, not a rug doctor!!!

Most of what is called “natural” is not natural at all. Everything is processed. When was the last time you ran across a natural pool of vinegar or a mound of baking soda?
The term I like to use is non-toxic. Items that are not laden with chemicals that will harm us are non-toxic. There are many products on the market today that are safe to use and don’t fill our homes with harmful chemicals. Your local health food store can help you. I choose to use products from Melaleuca. They are all non-toxic and work extremely well. (Most are tea tree oil based.)

Try Clorox’s new line of Green Cleaners. They’re awesome and aren’t as harsh as other chemicals.

Peroxide has great green benefits. It gets blood stains out of clothing, carpet, floors. Mix it with Baking Soda for a cleaning solution on sinks, counters, shower tile & tubs, as well as shower curtains. Rubbing alcohol with a lint-free white cloth is great on bathroom mirrors to clean and keep fog-free. Bleach and water is a great toilet bowl cleaner. Vinegar and water is great to mop floors with. I vacuum my windows, sills & blinds with my Rainbow vacuum. I dust with a very damp cloth and follow with a dry lint-free cloth.
