You are right about doing your part as a small equation of the population. I figure if you are conscientious about doing your part, then work on the bigger offenders like coal fired power plants, sewage treatment plants on water ways, and local government waste problems. There are so many corporate polluters that far exceed individuals that it is mind boggling!
Cleaner choices are there and have been there for a while…getting them to make the choice from public pressure is so important right now!
And don’t worry, corporate America is waiting for pressure from individuals.

I dont even take pollution into consideration when eating organic.
I mainly eat foods that otherwise would have been heavily pestisised or animals that would have been inhumanly raised .eg.meats, milk, vegetables. etc.
They are free from genetic modification and other sprays that are used in the farming industry that cause question.
I also mainly buy laundry detergents etc. that would otherwise irritate the skin and damage the environment.
They still use fuel in the process of these maybe a lot less as there is more hand labour intensive.
Otherwise organic is not always cheap and I dont buy it for everything as I am a student, but I still manage to eat a lot of organic foods and I think they do taste a lot better and a lot healthier for you.
Organic foods and products however are very environmentally friendly, as they have almost no effect on the environment from chemicals and factory by products. and are all made in eco-friendly ways.
The main source of greenhouse gas pollution is from coal power stations, as well as cars, so I would worry about these being the main sources of your pollution and go on a green power scheme or offset scheme.
As for farming pollution and wastes we can either go organic or expect the governments to step in for the mainstream food industry’s and get them to clean up their act.
So I would go organic still for:
1) Your health
2nd) the environment and to avoid as much industrial by-product as possible.

Unfortunately, we can measure the pollution result from efficient processes and not the less efficient processes. We dismissed the pollution form those “Green “:and inefficient processes since we have no way to make good measurement.

you’re very right…going completely organic is very expensive…there’s always gonna be something that we use or buy taht’s bad for the environment but the key is to use those things sparingly…for example- our society could not continue without the use of electricity or cars…just because one is an “environmentalist” doesn’t mean he has to stop using these things altogether…use them sparingly and wisely- conserve electricity when possible, use natural sunlight when possible, carpool to save gasoline and to reduce emissions, walk when possible…while it may not seem like your efforts are helping…if everyone did these things it would make a difference…unfortunately not everyone is this concerned but at least you have the satisfaction of knowing that you are doing your part

This sediment slowly suffocates the polyps of the precious coral reefs in the tropics. What is the main reason for cutting these rain forests down? The main reason is to make room to raise cattle, not logging as many people think. With logging they generally cut down large hardwoods. To raise cow meat they cut down everything. In Central America
much of the beef is exported to the United States. The cattle industry, over all, causes more global warming than car emissions do. What can the average person do? eat soy, legumes and nuts as a protein source. This is a better way to practice sustainability. If the beef is grown in the United States sorry that isn’t sustainable either. A person who eats cow meat (beef) as their main protein source requires about 20 acres of land each year and over 2000 gallons of precious water to raise that steer for protein. That is not sustainability. A person eating soy for their main source of protein only requires one acre of land and about 40 gallons of water each year to grow it. Also, soy doesn’t add millions of tons of methane gas each year to our atmosphere. it actually absorbs co2. cows do produce over 100 million tons of this global warming methane gas in the U.S. alone. Cattle excrement also is adding to major pollution problems in our water systems today. Stop eating beef! Or if you absolutely can’t stop eating beef, cut back to once a week or once a month. if you must eat a meat chicken is much less destructive to the environment than beef, here in the tropics. Besides, refraining from eating beef is healthier in the long run.
Here is another important environmental disaster, 90% percent of the shrimp served in the U.S. and in other countries comes from the tropics. It is harvested in non-sustainable ways. I have witnessed in one month over 190 sea turtles wash up on shore with their fins cut off, dead from drowning by shrimpers in the osa penninsula. Along with that, for every pound of shrimp harvested, about ten pounds of other creatures are killed and thrown overboard. Yes, much shrimp is farmed. The farms are generally constructed where mangrove swamps, another very important and fragile ecosystem, have been cut down for this purpose and ponds are made to raise the shrimp. After the shrimp are harvested from these ponds the water in them is released into the mangroves. Unfortunately the nitrate level is so high that many of the mangrove fish and other underwater creatures die. So eating shrimp is not sustainable either for our planet. If you want to take responsibility in helping save our planet from global warming, deforestation of the rain forests, dying coral reefs there are many other eating alternatives. please, eat to live, don’t live to eat.
For our children’s sake and the sake of the rain forests, coral reefs and the entire planet we need to step up and do something other than practice over indulgence. Cavemen had to hunt to get their protein and that was ok. Then we started raising animals to get our protein and that was needed. Now we know how to get all of the protein we need from plants. So it is time to evolve another step and stop the senseless cruelty to raising animals for food and also help control global warming and its effects at the same time.

The biggest source of environmental pollution is people. Not cows, not crops, but people.
I realize that this doesn’t really answer the meaning of your question.
The best way to start is to decide what is enough. You will get better health, better financial control, more time for your priorities and a better environment.
Enough is:
How many children do you really want, have time for, can afford and can educate? Fewer people would use less resources and cause less pollution. Zero Population growth does not mean no children, but just one or two children per family.
How many pairs of blue jeans, T-shirts, sweats, socks, underwear, etc… do you really need? Some clothes don’t need to be washed after every wear. Underwear and socks - yes. T-shirts, probably if you were sweating in them. Jeans - probably not, unless you got them muddy or otherwise dirty. The travel distance of our common clothes from manufacturer to point of sale is usually overseas. Laundry uses petroluem products in the soap and the machine operation (power). Washing too often wears clothes out and you have to buy more. Wash, wear and shop only when you need to, not to fill an emotional need.
How much food do you really need to eat? Take a look at the caloric requirements that are available for someone your age, weight and body frame - these charts and programs are available on line. Avoid over eating and over buying food that ends up getting thrown away.
And so on… decide what is enough for everything that you do and use.
Organic groceries - supermarkets charge a fortune for them! Because we pay for it. Buy from local farmers - in some areas of the country there are farms that will deliver vegetables to a central location that is near you. You go and pick up your box of vegetables from them. Look at the website under CSA Subscriptions for farmers with programs in your area.
The big factories are in business because of the little guy. It is the Law of Supply and Demand in action. To weigh the odds in their favor, the Big Guys created and use ADVERTISING to create in the little guy a WANT. If your Want is bigger than your NEED, you may be a victim of advertising.
Why do we want more than we can need and reasonably use? Greed and insecurity. Greed keeps us from having that things we want that we cannot buy - more time, peace of mind, health and freinds. Nobody dies thinking “Damn, I wish I had more jeans!”.
Insecurity of how we think we are perceived by other people makes us buy what everybody else buys. And yet, the people who have been celebrated the most and longest in a positive light are people who did things their own way and didn’t care what other people thought of them or their belongings. Go figure.
Start ignoring Advertising and peer pressure and decide for yourself when you need something and what makes that particular something good for you.
Your priority to to decide for yourself what you want, what you need and what is enough. For YOU.

Okay, now I am soooo sick of the people who say you have to do everything right now or you’re not doing enough. Then all the things they want you to do cost sooo much money. In reality just doing a few simple things can make a huge difference. And if you do it right can save you money in the long run. There is a box that was put out in the 90’s I think that’s called 50 simple things you can do to save the earth. It had real easy simple thing that if we did them would make a huge impact.
Before I really got into the go green thing I decided to just pick one thing every year to improve green. Now that I’m married and have kids we do it as a family. We also live in a very rural area where we don’t have the “green” options that others do.
Last year we picked energy for the home. We changed light bulbs to energy efficient ones, turned down the water heater, turn off lights. We just kept doing simple things all year by the end of the year we had cut our energy usage by 1/4.
This year we are going organic, but not in the traditional way. I know buying organic is way too expensive!!! I can’t do it even if I did the organic food we get here looks so gross.
What I do is grow what I can myself. I grow all my own herbs in containers. You would be amazed at what you can grow in a container. Then I go to the farmers market as often as I can if you buy locally even if they aren’t 100% organic they don’t have to ship the stuff and they don’t have to use the chemicals they would normally to keep the produce looking nice while shipping. We are cooking as much as we can at home. We buy our meat from a local butcher, there aren’t the preservatives in the meat and he buys from local farmers.
We haven’t tried to do every thing at once, but I think that over the years we have become a lot greener then we were before

wetlands like swamps have always been Natures natural filters for natural water flows,aquatic plants clean the water ,the anchored plants as well as the floating ones
we should redesign wetland flora with in natural water systems to help contra contamination.
stop sewage systems that connect to natural water flows ,forbid and police the dumping of rubbish on waters edges ,
the best way is through the educational systems ,starting at kiddy schools and rising in intensity with progression.
but in Mexico this is not accepted because this kind of education is not in the ciriculum.
In short the ways to protect the waters is

alternative farming methods away from using chemicals ,which eventually end up in the ground water supplies
to merely clean polution or try to clean is never effective because of population growth ,it gets worse by the year ,an impossible task

all plants and trees require certain chemicals and secrete others .
if there are too many of one specie ,the requirements are too much of the same and the soil gets exausted.
also if there is too much of the same chemical output the soil gets poluted,
and so bio diverse systems are always the healthiest
So agriculture polutes the soil apart from that this kind of farming uses pesticides ,herbicides and fertilizers,
because to much of one specie also attracts to much of one specie of preditors and disease,and is combatted with chemicals and too much of the same chemicals are demanded by the soil
on top of this heavy machinery is used which compacts the soil raising the salt content to the surface ,
the plough opens the top soil and this dries out .leaving it vulnarable to wind and water erosion (the dust is easily blown or washed away) and all micro organisms needed to build the soil are killed
so the destruction of lands is not only polution
other poluting factors are contaminated rain .and contaminated ground waters because of landfills
and contaminated beaches because of oilspills and sewage outlets,
And in the cities people continue to mix organic wastes with their trash ,this is responsible for 70% of soil contamination
SOLUTIONS
the worst you can do is throw it with the trash
70% of contamination is due to organic waste that is mixed in with the garbage .
and it is just as bad in the sewer where it helps to breed rats and in the landfill it poisons the ground
and it is the easiest to take care of
o first of all we have to clasify trash at least keep the organic to one side ,like in a plasic bin with a lid
if you got a few meters of ground ,you only need 1 or 2 square meters in a shallow hole ,in the shade ,that you can wet now and again ,where you dump everything that is organic ,from toilet paper,bones vegetable cuttings ,eggshells,,dead bodies ,excrement ,and cover regularly with leaves to keep humid and to hide any smell
the worms will come and decompose the wastes truning it into beautifull blck soil for the garden of flower pots .
if you are in a apartment ,if you have a balcony get a big plastic bin drill some holes in the side and lid ,
and add a few buckets of sand now and again to put over the trash ,you should realt stir or move the stuff at times to airate it and ensure that the decomposition is overall ,keep moist
this rubbish does not get big very fast and the thing works for a long time with out getting full
got a compost heap in the garden for 6 years ,have added tons of banana poles ,and palm leaves at times tree trunks ,the mountain goes up and down and never seems to get any bigger ,the stuff rots and becomes a very fine black compost of high density
We need more vigelance and control and laws for municipalities ,industry and agriculture plus education for farmers,on sustainable farming
and educating the public in not mixing organic wastes with their trash
AIR POLUTION
the smoke from industrial chimneys,the smoke from any fire
the escaping gasses from spraycans ,the fumes from all internal combustion engines in the world ,all contribute to air polution
.we live in a closed system,polution that is produced in one place can end up on the other side of the world.
there are aircurrants continuesly moving all around the globe, and 5 miles up in the air is a layer which can hold things as big as frogs ,that have been picked up by super evaporation ,that can come down somewhere else.
On the North pole contamination has been found in the ice ,that could have come from Newyork,
if people burn plastics or tires the contaminated smoke will go up and join aircurrants that take it someplace else.
